I was trying to d-load and install SP1 and in the middle of the installation process, actually closer toward the beginning of it, an error occurred with a message saying "The Product Key used to install Windows is invalid-Please contact your system administrator or retailer immediately to obtain valid Product Key.....etc....." now this is kind of strange so did any1 experience this same problem or knows how to go around it?

thanx in advance...

scoobie...do you have a legit copy of windows xp, or do you have a cracked version of xp? MS put a check into the service pack to check for a legit or a cracked copy of xp. if it is a legit copy, the service pack will go through and install, if it is a crack, then the service pack will stop, and let you know that it can't install b/c you don't have a legit copy of xp. make sure you have a legit copy, and not a copy.

well, it is indeed a copy but I have a key to it (otherwise I wouldn't be able to install it since it asks you for the key in the beginning of the installation) but I was wandering if there is a way to go around it?

Where did you get the key? If it was a legal key, it would come with the retail box or printed on the back of the CD sleeve (does your CD have one of those holograms on it). If you have the "corporate edition" that does not have the activation, you should contact your company about getting a new key (I assume that if you have the CE then you do work for someone).

I guess Microsoft found out that most of the warez copies out there came from a certain couple of copies of the CE edition. These are the primary keys that are disabled. You will not be able to install SP1, and I heard that they are going to disable Windows Update in the future for those key users also. I've seen evidence that hackers have gotten around it already, but of course you won't get any hints from me on that end. Just go buy a copy. :)

Don't you have MSDNAA access at SUNYSB? You could always ask your SC (the very cool Rob Wlodarczyk) about this if you don't know. MSDNAA access will allow to receive a legitimate product key from Microsoft, if not media as well. So, look into that as an option.

If anything, do some good posting on devhood and wrack up at least 100 points (submit good tools for more points) and attend the meetings regularly, and when they feel you're worthy, they'll give you a free copy of WinXP pro with it's own product key. Seriously, if you help devhood, they help you!!!

Aaron, thanks for the kind words. Yes, Stony Brook has MSDNAA. It's available only on campus from the public computing sites (what we call SINC Sites). The web address and instrucation for use can be found in a similar posting on our Stony Brook school forums under "General Discussion".

I have done much reading on this problem. One of the ways around this is: Checking the Product ID. If you have a Product IDs such as: xxxxx-640-0000356-23xxx and xxxxx-640-2001765-23xxx they are no good. These keys are from Microsoft and they were found not to work during testing, but some how they got realased onto the internet and bam people got them and starting using them. So To change the product ID:
Log in as the local admin
click start, run and type in Regedit
browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\wpaevents
In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify
Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows
Click ok and close regedit
Click start, run and type in: "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a"
Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next
Click Change Product Key (at the bottom)
Enter you valid Corporate Product Key
Press Update and clost the window
If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later
Restart you computer

Verify the Change:
After the workstation restarts, click Start, run
Type in : "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a" without the quotes
Make sure the dialog box says 'your copy of Windows is already activated'

That should help you

YOU said that, microsoft are going to stop people that non legit keys, by stoppin them using WINDOWS UPDATE,,

well guess what, ? i came up accross that problem, and what you need to do, is put your windows xp pro cd, and instal agen, but as an upgrade, and basically, dont update, using window update, or dont update SP1, thats about it really, and you might wanna try dis site out

http://www.trinsic.org/

if you install SP1, after a while you will not be able to do windows update, and you will not be able to get on any MSN sites, not even msn messsenger,
i found that, msn messenger version 1.0 worked, (but thats old!!)

and get JVM bcoz SP1 is just a waste of time, and efforrt,, but they sed that, all other updates will installed, only if SP1 is on your system,, SO THATS A problem !! email me, if you have over come that ...

There's a prog right here that does all that regedit stuff for you.

http://www.semicoolsoftware.com/

But you still need a working CD Key. I decided to try Kazaa because it's so helpful with everything else, but the only 10 or 12 keys I found, after I downloaded them all and opened them, it turned out they were the same. But as with anything else I look for on Kazaa, I will try at different times of day when different people are logged on to see what they have.

msjavx86.exe (latest Microsoft Virtual Machine) is the only file I really needed from the XP SP1 anyway, so I found it somewhere else...
