Well, we've got best games, best movies, and best dvd's, seems like it's time to have a best anime thread. There must be quite a few fans out there, let's here what you think. Any recommendations for new anime would be good too.

My personal favorite is Trigun. The story and artwork are the best I've seen. Some others are pretty close (Gasaraki, Inuyasha...), but I don't think they bring everything together quite as well.
I just watched the first 6 episodes of Hellsing. It's kind of a rip-off of Trigun in some ways, but looks like it could end up being one the best vampire animes out there. One to keep an eye on.

Anime? Oh yeah. I'd have to recommend Cowboy Bebop. The artwork and detailing in this anime is fantastic! The voice acting is some of the best I've seen in a while! And the Music!! Oh man!! This music is absolutely amazing!! Yoko Kanno does a brilliant job of using Jazz and Blues styles to fit into the show! If you plan to watch an anime series, I highly recommend this one. Watch all 26 episodes and then the movie!!

I'd have to say Project A-Ko!! Great series <g> Maybe DBZ when they aren't annoying me by promising all new episodes and right when it starts getting really good, lets loop it around to a way earlier part. Voltron was also good, though the US/Japanese ones are really different..

Don't forget to throw Akira and Ghost in the shell into the mix.

DBZ was always too cartoony for me. Everything about it makes me think its target audience is 5 year olds.
I'm a big fan of Kenshin (can't stand the dubbing in samurai x, so i stick to subtitles. :) )
and Cowboy Bebop is really cool too.
Those are my two favorites.

I'm only familiar with 0080, 0083, X, Wing, and A. Has anyone seen any of the others, know if they're any good, fansubbed/licensed, etc...?

the classics are: 0080 and 0083, they are really old... and you can sort of relate the lightsabers / the "i am your father" thingy with star wars
I personally enjoyed the story for:
z (still about guy-girl, love and enemy...)
F91 (really nice one, about a kid has the key to operate the most powerful Gundam designed by his mom who passed away...)
v (victory gundam)
X (ten years war)
wing (famous one)
GP03 (also famous)
i havent watched these:
zz
A (newest one)
about the license, i am not sure, i think i watched them in plain japanese
