I was able to change it by playing DOA3 and placing in top ten in something and the name I entered was given to the machine. Don't know if this works everytime but ever since then the name of my machine has been the same as the DOA3 top score name I use. Try it and see what happens.

There is some nickname file on the hard-drive and it grabs the names from that.... however it is basically untouchable and therefore you cannot change it directly.

If you go to play Halo multiplayer, then you can see it on the top of the player list. I am assuming any network-capable game will end up showing you this information.
Mine used to be called "Hollywood" before it took on the name "John" from my score on DOA3.

When me and my housemate played DOA3, we also ended up with this problem for his XBox. We used the name Ein to unlock the secret character and ever since the box has this name. This isn't in some way a bug for the XBox is it? I mean, I know that the box changes the names through that nickname file, but is this designed to happen?

I think there is some API call that can change the name of the XBox. In order to be cool, DOA3 seems to like to change that name whenever someone enters the top score list.
The name of your XBox should change the next time someone enters the top score list, and enters a different name from Ein.

Maybe the name only comes out on games that support the broadband connection thing? because i dont see a reason where it would serve any purpose in single player or single console games.

Acctualy Im pretty sure there's a way to change the name. My friend has the xbox magazine or something like that and in there it says there's a 1-800 number to call to find out how to change it. I'll find it and report back.

I just called the Tech Support and they just told me that, "You cannot change the name of your xbox. It comes preset." Which well all know is false since ours are changed. I don't know what to do. I might try the DOA3 thing to change it. If I find out more I will write back.

can you change it in halo single player? or do you need to be in multiplayer and it takes the name of your character? also where do you see what the name of your xbox is? do you see it on the dashboard or do you see it somewhere else?

When you play online games for halo i know it shows it then. It'll have the name of your box at the top and then the players right below that. No one is quite sure how to set the name but as far as i can figure it has something to do with setting your name in some kind of high score thing. Also it may be like on halo when you enter your controler set up, whatever you put your name in might set the name of your box to that name. Oh well.

now that is interesting. i didn't see an area to put a name besides the name of the player you are playing with. is that area you are talking about for putting your name in? so the only way to see the name is to play online games? i will have to check that out to see what mine is named. thanks a lot.

Here is the only way that I know of to change the name (so far...)
Play DOA3 and score well enough to place your name in the top score list. That name that you enter will become the new name of the XBox.
