Which is your favourite free email provider?
I use Yahoo, because it gives me an extra option: forwarding fro free.

Remember it is not free forwarding. You agree to recieve junk mails (or promotional mail if you want to call that way) in order to get your email forwarded. Also if you want your email forwarded to other addresses, there are many sites which offer this to you for free.

"Forwarding for free" refers to forwarding all your Yahoo-email to another e-mail account automatically.

What a coincidence, I was just about to ask this myself. I'm not sure which one to use as my main email. Hotmail has the nicer web interface, but Yahoo lets you import your address book from Outlook. Is there anyway to do this w/ Hotmail? Doesn't make sense. You can send/receive w/ both in Outlook Express, so no advantage there. But I also use MyYahoo as my homepage so I can see if there's new mail instantly. As of this moment I'm going w/ Hotmail though.

I think Homail has a more user-friendly interface, so I favor hotmail

I'm currently using hotmail. However,
I'm considering changing to Yahoo, because Hotmail only allows
2MB of space and Yahoo allows 4MB, if I'm not mistaken. Hotmail should do the same,
although I think they have too many users for that.

Some of the functions in hotmail don't seem to work correctly when used in non-IE browsers (such as opera). For example, in opera, delete messages by checking the message boxes and press delete will yield the error "you haven't select any message". So I would prefer yahoo mail over hotmail.

I've never used Yahoo (I use Hotmail). Aside from "Forward for Free", are there any additional benefits? What are the pros and cons?

Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't gone Web mail shopping in a while...features may have changed:
but I think Hotmail doesn't allow you to download your mail into your own e-mail client, like Eudora or Outlook... it only lets you sync with Outlook/Outlook Express...
I find my Yahoo accounts generate less junk mail than my hotmail accounts.
Hotmail looks graphically better....but to me, that's just a waste of time downloading the graphics/interface. I want my web mail fast, with little/no crap.
For those who think you need hotmail to use MSN Messenger/Passport...you don't. Go to Passport and you can signup using any e-mail address. Everyone is always surprised to see me with a Yahoo account on MSN.
Yahoo lets you forward e-mail...yes you have to opt in to a mailing list...but if you don't check any interests, you don't get any e-mail!
The Yahoo portal is cool (Geocities, Finance, My Yahoo, Messenger, Games, Address book, Briefcase...)
I think Yahoo e-mail limit is 6.0 MB right now...not sure about Hotmail... if it is indeed 2MB as stated above, then Yahoo beats it....
Yahoo doesn't force MSN Messenger Open everytime you log in.
I don't think Yahoo closes down your mailbox/address book like hotmail does if you don't check it for a while.
you can use Yahoo as your SMTP server...not sure you can do that with Hotmail or not.
;) as you can see, I'm a little bias towards Yahoo.
A con to both...is that it's hard to find a good e-mail name...
Yahoo especially...good UserID's are taken up like crazy...
If you're looking for a good place to get a good name, try mail.com they have a whole range of domains with lots of good userid's still available to be used.

When I used to use a hotmail account, I got lots of spam on it. Yahoo I don't get any spam (well once in a blue moon I get one as a result of mailing list I'm on or some other non-yahoo reason). It might have not been hotmail's fault, but I thought it was at the time (I still think it probably was). Also, Yahoo gives you 6 MB for a mailbox.

I've tried using Yahoo before and it wouldn't sign up for the d*** account for me, so now I use Hotmail. Personally I'd rather not use either, but you have to put an email on all the accounts you sign up for so it best be a free one where you check irregularly :)

I really like hotmail, because you have junk mail filters on it, which are very effective. Also, if you get pieces of mail from places that get through your filter, you have the option of blocking ALL mail from a particular domain, which usually solves the problem. Does Yahoo have this type of option as well?? This is by far the best feature on hotmail, IMHO.

I think yahoo is the superior free email. I'll admit that its interface is somewhat busy and that it comes with alot of advertisements. But you get 4 mb of space plus the yahoo account remains active for a longer period of time. I with hotmail you loose your account if you haven't accessed it for 30 days.

I'm still not convinced that Yahoo is secure. Like I mentioned in the other Yahoo mail thread, even if you sign out completely, you (or anyone with access to your computer... roomates etc.) can gain access to your inbox through IE history. I have an account with Yahoo, but since I discovered this, I use it only for junk mail and when I don't want to give people my school account. I like hotmail on some accounts. Especially on the security issues. Although personally, I think the interface is nicer at Yahoo.
I also have an account at Canada.com. I like this one because it's kind of cool to have @canada.com for an email address. Plus, it also allows you to "forward for free". I get all my Canada.com email at my school account. My account is about 3 years old, and to this date, I have not received any spam to that account.
There's my two cents.

In response to the junk mail filter: A minor downside of Yahoo is that they automatically filter your email that they think is junk into a "Bulk Mail" folder. It only placed a couple of my emails there, and it was just like them being in the Inbox except it deletes itself occasionally, but I didn't like it. And it caught all the spam that I got on Yahoo. It's not a problem since I started using Outlook to get my mail. But so I guess the answer is yes, yahoo filters your email for junk also.

Hotmail sucks when it comes to spam. Also, Yahoo suppors a pop server, which is good. Hotmail is more secure though.
