so, i just thought it was funny that all the icons are male characters. it's not that i'm trying to say y'all are being sexist, but it would be kinda cool at some point to add some female warrior characters to the mix. i know that i'd prefer to attain the level of valkyrie warrior as opposed to knight... but that's just me. might make the site feel more inclusive. this is not to start a discussion on sexism or anything like that... it would just be cool to have both genders represented seeing as there were female warriors, witches, sorceresses etc. that are analog to the male icons you have. :)

It would be nice, but I think I read that the icons are from the game AoE, though I've never played it. If that is the case, then if the game does not have female counter parts, it would explain why there are no female icons. Though maybe that could give girls more incentive to contribute having the female rank *shrug*.

it would just be cool. :) and i figure that to make this site a success you have to play on every angle possible to get people to participate.

Well, this is sexist but true: most warriors are male. At least those from the time period these icons are from (the middle ages). There could be alternatives, true. Like witches, soceresses... maybe if you're interested you or anyone who wants to could come up with a 1:1 list of equivilencies and search around for a good set of pictures? Might convince some of the sysadmins to give you some good experience points for it :)

I like that idea. That will definitely make more girls to contribute:) But one thing is that we have to make sure guy has guy icons and girls has teh girl icons. IT would be really weird if the guy has a female icon, right?
Well, first at least we got to distinguish which are females or males, because its hard to tell the sex from an Asian name. I guess we can do that when we fill out the registration form.

Does it really matter if guys pick male icons, shouldn't we allow freedom to choose :)
How about caste icons that are gender neutral, but the picture one sees is something that you get to upload? Say the picture off your homepage or something like that?

Yes it would, but I'm sure some might change it just to be different 8)

Can we actually have that? I mean I know sometimes people can usually decline from specifying their gender, would they in that case be defaulted to the 'male' graphics?

Have a separate caste for say, animals. Sort of an evolution for people who decline to reveal their sex by their icon.
LOL.

Filling out gender on the registration form would be the simplest way to do it.

Well, the problem with that is that right now we can tell at a glance what rank someone is, once you're familiar with the various caste symbols. If everyone used their own then you couldn't do it that way. I personaly think that haveing each person use their own pic for the caste picture is a really bad idea. If you want your own pic online then that's what your member info is for.

Isn't there some antidiscrimination law that makes it illegal to officially ask for gender when signing up for sites like this. Maybe since it is non profit that doesn't apply. Or maybe I am off my rocker.

I think only if it would effect things, as in if you are a guy you get more rights then girls or the like. And as stated, just have an option to decline to answer (have that be default use the male icons maybe).

I'm positive it's legal to ask. Yahoo asks, and I think even passport asks. What isn't legal is to give people different rights based on their response.

first of all Xena is not a MAN!!! Lucy Lawless rocks like slayer.
Second of all, I think that it would just be fun if we could have a series of icons for gals... you could easily come up with an analagous set. And those of you who think that there are not representative female warriors from the medeival ages are seriously mistaken. The same names could be used or something like valkyrie, amazon, warrioress, soldier, sorceress - witch has a poor connotation to it, knight could be either gender - just have a female icon for those that want it.

I'm thinking the difficulty is not whether or not an analagous set exists, but rather coming up with the different poses/armors for each castes.

I think you have fiction confused with reality? Sorceress?
Sure there are many female terms in fiction but reality? Who? Joan of Arc didn't exactly try to look female.

Just wondering, how many wizards are there in reality? I mean considering we have a cube with eyes as a logo, sorceress seems acceptable :)
