the volume contral icon is not showing up in the taskbar. I have checked my setting in sound and device and made sure that the option "place volume control in the task bar" is selected. I have also disable the choice of "hide inactive icon" in the taskbar. So i thought the volume control would show up. But mine would not after i installed icq and icq plus. Is there anyway that i can make it to re-appear again.

You said it dissapeared after you installed icq and icq plus? Maybe you should uninstall both of the programs and see if your volume control icon shows back up.

Also, if you have the Power Toys for XP installed there is an option to hide certain icons from the system tray - could that be the case for you?

if none of those worked, the simplest fix that i know of, is in the audio properties, unclick the "show sound icon in taskbar" ... click apply .... then reselect the "show sound icon in taskbar" ... and it should reappear. I had that problem before and that worked. But sometimes after rebooting the icon would disappear again. I'm not sure why it did that, but since i hardly changed the volume in the O/S I didnt mind much.

There may be a possible glitch after installing icq plus. Did you try rebooting your system?
If that doesn't work, try uninstall icq plus to see if that is the problem.
If icq plus doesn't seem to be the problem, try uninstall icq (make sure to back up your list).
If icq doesn't seem to be the problem, to back track on what things you have installed to see if there is a conflict.

I hope this helps.

Check Taskbar properties, and under Custom, make sure the volume icon isn't being forced to somehow always be minimized. Worst comes to worse: have it always appear.

I think this 'bug' may go beyond just the volume icon ... I have had my LAN network status icon disappear from the taskbar sometimes at random, despite it being set to show. The connection still works fine but the icon just seems to blink in and out, often for days at a time.

I have also set my volume icon as "always show", but sometimes it shows up, sometimes it doesn't.
I have to disable "Place volume icon in the taskbar" (from Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, Volume tab) and then enable it again in order to have the volume icon to show up. It is very annoying for not having the volume icon in taskbar.

Hello Ivan, When I goto Sounds and Audio Devices and check
the "place the volume icon in the taskbar" box I get a windows
error saying the "volume control program has not been installed.
Hmmm I havent been able to locate the program on any of my discs

I have had this problem with beta versions of WinXP. I found that if I switched my taskbar to classic mode icons would randomly dissapear. Leaving it with the XP style seemed to fix it for me..

That being said, currently my volume control dissapears too. I belive that its the fault of my sound driver though. C-Media has its own volume control that is always there (its a TSR) and it keeps disableing the normal pannel. Every time I turn it back on in the control panel it stays for awhile then is gone again.

Hi Tony, I am assuming you have are using your PC pre-installed with Windows XP. From what I know, you shouldn't get the error message unless the audio device driver is corrupted (which is rare in Windows XP). If you open the "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" from control panel, and under the "Volume" tab, you should see your type (name) of audio device listed on top (right of speaker icon and above the Device Volume). If the type of audio is there and you still experince the error message, you probably need to update the driver or reinstall the audio driver. You can always call your PC manufacturer for the latest audio driver.

That happened to my aunt's computer...maybe just try to restore the cpu, like, reinstall xp. That annoys me a lot too, because you have to go into the control panel to mess with the volume, or you could just get the kind of speakers that have the vol. knob right on them :)
